Kroger Indianapolis Meat and Clerk Negotiations Update

UNITY IN 2008

WE’RE WINNING

Indianapolis members ratified a new four year contract that expands preventive care to include dental coverage, protects members pensions, improves prescription coverage, and provides pay increases and bonuses.

Most importantly, members will not have any increase in their health insurance weekly co-premiums. We put a stop to cost shifting to members – and, we built on our groundbreaking program of fully paid preventive medical services to also provide no cost dental cleanings. Under the old contract, some members had to pay half the cost of preventive dental care.

We also won an increase in the part time pay scale cap – and eliminated the cap for full time bakery, deli and floral classifications. Members will have more flexibility on overtime requests and we strengthened protection against unfair treatment with improved contract language on arbitration.

We merged the Meat and Clerk contracts just as we did in Fort Wayne and South Bend, so we will have more bargaining strength in the future. Members previously covered under the Meat Department contract will now have across the board improvements from seniority rights to Holiday pay.

The Meat pension funding remains secured, and the Clerk pension will receive a significant 42% increase in additional funding to keep it secure into the future under the Pension Protection Act of 2006.

Our new contract stands in contrast to what’s happening to non-union workers in almost every industry. Most non-union workers are facing out-of-control health care costs – and, in some cases the complete loss of benefits. Virtually no non-union workers have a pension plan, or a regular schedule of pay increases. No non-union workers have what we have – protection against unfair firings, discipline or discrimination with the right to an impartial hearing and union representation.

We should be proud of what we have accomplished – and we should get active in our Union so we can be even stronger at the bargaining table.

We thank our Negotiating Committee for standing strong during negotiations and staying committed and dedicated to the members of Local 700.
